Large Handwoven Sweetgrass Platter Basket

A striking example of traditional Lowcountry craftsmanship, this large sweetgrass platter basket is handwoven in South Carolina by Gullah Geechee artisan Jennifaye Kimberly Wright Singleton. Its generous size, intricate coiled weave, and distinctive sculptural handles make it a beautiful statement piece for a table, wall, or display.

Jennifaye comes from a family of sweetgrass basket makers whose tradition spans more than six generations. She began learning the craft at age seven from her aunt, Martha Wright, and continued developing her skills by watching and learning from family members throughout her life.

Each basket is created entirely by hand using traditional materials including sweetgrass, pine needles, bulrush, and palmetto. The natural variations in the materials and Jennifaye's intuitive weaving ensure that no two baskets are exactly alike.

Sweetgrass basketry is an important Gullah Geechee cultural tradition rooted in West African basket-making techniques and carried forward in South Carolina's Lowcountry for generations. Today, baskets such as this one represent both a living cultural tradition and an extraordinary form of functional art.
